Understanding the Difference Between Allergies and Sinus Problems

Understanding the Difference Between Allergies and Sinus Problems

Stuffy nose, facial pressure, headaches, and congestion can make anyone feel miserable. The tricky part in finding relief: These symptoms can happen with both allergies and sinus infections, making it hard to know what’s actually causing the problem, or how to treat it.

At ENT Specialists, our team is skilled in diagnosing the cause of these symptoms and treating them, regardless of whether they’re caused by allergies or sinus issues. Read on to learn some simple ways to tell the differences between allergies and sinus infections, along with why prompt treatment is so important.

Why allergies and sinus infections happen

Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to harmless substances like pollen, dust mites, mold, or pet dander. When exposed to these triggers, your immune system initiates the release of the chemical histamine, which in turn leads to sneezing, itchy eyes, rashes, and other allergy symptoms.

Seasonal allergies typically flare up during times when pollen and mold exposure is highest, while “indoor” allergies — like allergies to dust mites and chemical products — can cause symptoms year-round. In either case, exposure patterns tend to be consistent, providing clues to help distinguish between an allergic reaction and a sinus infection or cold.

Sinus infections (sinusitis) occur when your sinuses become inflamed and infected. These infections can happen on their own, but they often follow a cold or other respiratory ailment that blocks normal sinus drainage, allowing bacteria to grow inside the sinus cavity.

Sinus infections can be acute, lasting a few weeks, or chronic, lingering for months. Because they’re caused by germs, they require prompt medical treatment to clear the infection and prevent complications.

Similar symptoms, subtle differences

Even though allergies and sinus infections happen for different reasons, they share many of the same symptoms. That’s because both conditions affect your sinuses — and that’s why it’s not always easy to tell them apart, at least initially.

For example, both sinus infections and allergies cause nasal congestion, that persistent sensation of a “stuffy nose” that makes breathing feel like a chore. Both can be accompanied by a runny nose, sneezing, postnasal drip, headaches, and fatigue.

However, there are some key differences in both the type of symptoms and the way those symptoms occur: For instance, while sinus infections are contagious, allergies are not — you cannot “catch” an allergy from someone else.

Because they’re caused by germs, sinus infections often involve a fever. Allergies do not. While both conditions can cause headaches, sinus infections are more likely to involve facial pressure and pain, focused on your cheeks, nose, and forehead, where your sinuses are located.

Finally, allergies usually follow a pattern, with symptoms associated with specific triggers. Remove the trigger, and your symptoms should decrease. A sinus infection will continue until the germs are “conquered,” a process that usually requires antibiotics.

The critical importance of early diagnosis

Knowing whether you’re dealing with a sinus infection or an allergy is essential for finding relief and preventing complications.

Without prompt and appropriate care, a sinus infection can spread, leading to more serious respiratory infections, like pneumonia. Even a seemingly harmless allergy can increase your risk of respiratory infections if symptoms cause your airways and nasal passages to become blocked.
