Is Balloon Sinuplasty Right for You in Draper, UT? Sinus Surgery Procedure & Recovery

Dealing with chronic sinusitis can be miserable. It will often bring with it horrible migraines and pressure that is difficult to endure. Anytime you are experiencing chronic health problems, your quality of life is drastically affected. For those that suffer from chronic sinusitis there is a cutting edge technique called balloon sinuplasty to offer relief. ENT Specialists are proud to offer this procedure to our patients here in the Intermountain West and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ideal Candidates for Balloon Surgery

When patients are suffering from chronic sinusitis, there are several treatment plans to help offer relief. The first method is generally the use of different medications. For some patients these medications are all they need to feel much better but for others, it just doesn’t cut it. When medications like antibiotics, nasal steroids and over the counter medications aren’t working, balloon sinuplasty is a wonderful alternative.

Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure

Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure to open the blocked sinus cavities and allow the sinuses to work as they should. Following are the steps taken during a balloon sinuplasty procedure.
1. A wire and balloon are gently and guided into the inflamed sinus.
2. The balloon is inflated with air to open up and expand the sinus opening.
3. Saline is used to clean out the sinus cavity and flush out any mucus and pus that may be trapped in the sinuses.
4. The balloon is deflated and removed, leaving the sinus open and clear.
With the balloon inflated and opening the sinus, all of the infection and mucus that is trapped in the sinuses are able to be drained efficiently from the sinuses. Opening the sinuses with the balloon allows the sinuses to return to normal function without cutting and causing trauma.

How Long Does it Take to Recover from Balloon Sinuplasty?

Many patients are choosing balloon sinuplasty rather than traditional surgery, because it is minimally invasive and doesn’t require the same recovery time other methods do. This procedure is either done as an outpatient setting as well as an in-office procedure with local anesthesia. Within just two days, most patients feel ready to complete their normal daily activities.

Balloon Sinuplasty Risks

Balloon Sinuplasty should always be performed by a licensed, practicing ear, nose and throat specialist. The complications of this procedure are very small. With any procedure there is always a small risk of infection and trauma. With balloon sinuplasty, there is also a small risk of optic injury.
