Hearing Aids

Our goal at ENT Specialists is to provide a full range of medical treatements to help alleviate your ear-related conditions. One of the treatment options that we offer is hearing aids. We realize that a hearing aid may not always be the best option; therefore, we have a full staff of doctors and physician assistants that can help you determine the option that is best for you.

Hearing aids are devices worn to amplify sound for varying degrees of hearing loss, for all ages. An audiologist is trained to recommend and fit hearing aids that are best suitable for your degree and type of loss as well as lifestyle. Today’s hearing aids are digitally processed and programmed to fit each individual’s unique hearing loss. According to the Better Hearing Institute, hearing aid usage is positively related to the following quality of life issues. Hearing loss treatment was shown to improve:

  • Earning power
  • Communication in relationships
  • Intimacy and warmth in family relationships
  • Ease in communication
  • Emotional stability
  • Sense of control over life events
  • Perception of mental functioning
  • Physical health

How Hearing Aids Work

The microphone on the hearing aid picks up the acoustic signal where it translates it to an electrical signal. The signal is then amplified. This amplified electrical signal is then translated back to an acoustic signal by the receiver and sent into the ear canal, causing the eardrum and middle ear bones to vibrate. This vibration continues into the inner ear and creates movement of inner ear fluid. Movement in the inner ear creates electrical impulses in cochlear hair cells which are then sent by the hearing nerve to the brain and are perceived as sound.
