There are many questions that may cross your mind when you experience a painful episode of sinus congestion. Typically, the sinus pressure can easily be identified by the pain you are feeling in your ears. The sinuses and ears are connected, causing the pain in the ears. The pressure in your ears can be affected by sinus congestion and stuffiness. You may experience pain in your ears, dizziness, and a sensation that makes your ears feel muffled or clogged because sinus pressure affects more than just your nose. Today, we at ENT Specialists would like to offer several remedies that can help you find relief.

Relief for Clogged Ear Sinus Congestion & Pressure

Decongestant: Nasal sprays or tablets, or other over-the-counter decongestants can relieve sinus blockage, which relieves the pressure on the ears. A quick remedy for the sinus pain can be nasal decongestants, however, use of more than three days is not recommended and should be avoided. Be sure to strictly follow the directions listed on the medication should you opt to give the decongestants a try.
Pain Medication: Relieving pain associated with sinus pressure can optimally be done with over the counter pain medication that you may already have at home in your medicine cabinet. Ibuprofen Naproxen, and Acetaminophen are a few examples that can relieve the pain. For the best over the counter option, consult with your physician or pharmacist.
Blow Nose Gently: For quick relief, clearing out the pressure by gently blowing your nose can help. Block one nostril while blowing, then change nostrils and repeat as an optimal technique. This will help reduce the sinus pressure in the ears. You can feel worse by blowing too hard, so be careful.
Stay Hydrated: Keeping your nasal mucus thin and help you stay hydrated, be sure to drink plenty of fluids such as water and other non-caffeinated drinks. Thinner nasal mucus will help keep the drainage optimal as well. The sinus pain you are experiencing in your ears can be relieved with the draining of your nasal mucus.
Saline Rinse: An effective option at relieving nasal congestion and ear pain is using a saline rinse or nasal irrigation. Using a saline solution, the saline rinse is a method to flush out your nasal passages that frequently uses a device such as a bulb syringes, special squeeze bottles, or a Neti pot.
Steam: With a bowl of hot water and a large towel give yourself a steam treatment. Simply position your face over the bowl and drape the towel over your head. Until the water cools, breathe in the steam. Some patients will also add Menthol, Eucalyptus oils, or Camphor to their water during the steam treatment. The steam loosens the mucus, which helps to relieve sinus congestion. A hot shower producing steam can also help loosen up the compacted mucus and help you find relief.
