Facial Scars Treatment in Salt Lake City, UT; How to Remove Old Wound Scars from Face

One often feels self conscious when they have to bear facial scars. Depending on how many layers of skin was affected, dictates the severity of the scarring that could have derived from accidents, severe acne, burns, and past surgeries. When a scar happens, it is permanent, unless the patient invests in surgical options. In most instances, scars can be completely corrected, or at the very least, left exceptionally less visible. To help remove or at least reduce facial scarring, facial scar revision is a surgical technique that is often applied. Today, we at the ENT Specialists would like to take the opportunity to elaborate on facial scar revision options for people considering the procedure to diminish their facial scars.

How to Remove Contracture Scars on Face

When a scar is of the contracture type, surgery generally involves removing the scar tissue entirely. Skin flaps that are unscarred and healthy adjacent to the scar are then lifted and moved to create a new incision line. Additionally, a skin graft may be used if a flap is not an option. When a skin graft involves sections of skin tissue from one area and it is attached to another, time is of the essence following surgery for new blood vessels and soft tissue to form. To minimize visibility, a method to move a scar from one area to another where it is usually natural fold or crease in the skin, this is known as Z-plasty. Z-plasty is not designed to completely remove the scar but it does significantly make it less noticeable. Another method frequently utilized by surgeons, is laser resurfacing and dermabrasion, which make scars that are rough or elevated, less prominent. It is done by removing the upper layers of skin with an abrading tool or laser light. It will be less visible and a lot smoother to the touch, though the scar still remains.

Keloid or Hypertrophic Scar Removal

Keloid or hypertrophic scars commonly turn to surgical removal if the injections did not leave satisfactory results, as scars are first treated with injections of steroids to reduce size. In an effort to make the scars less prominent after the Keloid or hypertrophic, scars are surgically removed and then the incisions are closed with fine stitches.

Facial Scar Revision

Feeling some discomfort are expected after most facial scar revision surgeries. Some bruising, swelling, and redness will follow, which is typically unavoidable. To ensure the effectiveness of your surgery, the doctor and staff will remind you of all the home care that you need to follow up on to reduce the affects of the surgery. It is important to remember skin needs healing time. After the surgery, the surgeon will strongly suggest you decrease activity for a time. To reduce swelling, the staff will likely recommend cold compresses, along with elevating your feet when you lie down and to avoid places and situations where it can cause undue stress to the incision area. Medication is prescribed as needed and any other medication needs may also be recommended prior to the surgery. You can expect results a day or two after surgery but it should be noted scar tissues require a year or more to fully heal and achieve maximum improvement to the appearance. If you are self-conscious about any facial scarring, call the ENT Specialists for a consultation and we will happily discuss your options.
