Sinus Headaches

There are different types of headaches that can burden you on a daily basis, but sinus headaches can be especially troubling. This type of headache is often improperly diagnosed and can be difficult to treat. Sinus pain is caused when the tissue of the sinus cavities becomes inflamed, which then prevents the sinuses from properly draining and creates pressure. Allergies, smoking, sudden change in temperature, harsh chemicals and common illness can cause swelling in the sinuses. Sinus headaches are caused by blockage, usually the result of infection or inflammation of the sinus cavities.

Tension Headaches or Migraines

Tension headaches or migraines are often mistaken for sinus headaches, but a sinus headache will usually be paired with other symptoms such as congestion, fatigue, a cough or sore throat, and fever. A sinus headache will cause consistent, throbbing pain and pressure in the forehead, cheek bones, and between the eyes. Sinus headaches are also aggravated by movement and usually become worse when laying down or with sudden movement of the head.

Treatment for Sinus Headaches

The treatment for sinus headaches is two-fold and requires treating the infection itself as well as the symptoms. To treat the pain, try taking the recommended amount of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen sodium (Aleve), or acetaminophen (Tylenol). Often times these medications can help reduce sinus pain and other treatments help decrease sinus pressure. Along with over the counter decongestants, a humidifier can reduce congestion and help keep your sinuses moist. Drinking more water and juice can also help thin out mucus and promote natural drainage. Call for an appointment with your health care provider for a diagnoses of your condition or if you have worsening or persistent symptoms.
